Later this week, Kelly and I will be making our annual pilgrimmage to the 2nd most magical place on earth.
Well, first we're stopping at my sister's house. Although the house will be full of fantastically fun characters, the place just ain't magical, at least not that I'm aware of.
The place I'm referring to is called Harding University on Spring Sing Weekend. Of course, anyone who has attended said university knows that the place transforms to a magical place one weekend a year.
This one weekend brings in, literally, THOUSANDS of alumni, prospective students, parents, and friends to Searcy, Arkansas.
I first made my appearance there in 1997 as a junior in high school, then returned in '98. The next year I played my trumpet part proudly on stage in the jazz band, as I did the following 3 years. Since I graduated, I've only missed one performance (it was in 2006, and I will never forgive myself ;-).
Many people have tried to describe in words what the show is and how it works. Just the other day I tried to give a basic outline to my head director. You can imagine the face of a man who 1) doesn't attend the Church of Christ, therefore does not understand our pride in our singing, 2) has only heard of Harding through me, therefore does not understand the role of the conservative Christian school within the realm of C of C schools, and 3) knows that there are some things that sound silly when described, but aren't in reality. (btw, I do believe that spring is silly, so those of you who just rolled your eyes should feel ashamed for assuming I'm a dork)
If you've made it this far into this post and still have no idea what Spring Sing is, google it. Go to YouTube and search for it. Better yet, make your way to Searcy this Saturday and watch the evening show (surely it's not sold out, the Benson holds over 4,000 people for pete's sake!).
Bottom line, I'm one of the annoying people in the world that looks forward to Spring Sing weekend. I've got several friends there (or coming in), so I'm guessing I'm going to be surrounded by good company.
And, I'll be taking bets on how many times my mouth eats a regular 4 on wheat from Lenny's.

I had no idea Hooker schools had a website. How crazy! I'm glad you guys are stopping in on your way there and back. Although my house could be magical - we could sing and cheorograph!
I am sooooooo jealous. I'll be thinking of you as I sit on my couch with my knee propped up, watching old reruns. I hope you guys have a fantastic time and tell everyone hi for us!
Hope it was wonderful! Glad you could go.
